Going for Growth
3 Clear Growth Trends in the Diesel Generator Sets Industry
November 2024
Not all growth is created equally. It varies across sectors, segments, regions and products.  Â
Here we look at three growth trends in the diesel generator sets industry, all of them backed up by strong evidence. Â
2024 is set to be another record year for the diesel generator sets industry. Our current forecast, based on halfyear data and data available for Q3 is around 13% growth in value terms. Â
But as with everything, that growth is not shared equally. Â
And here are two examples:
A mid-market independent packager of diesel generator sets, selling mostly units below 1,500 kVA in Europe will probably experience market growth of less than 2% in 2024. And if they also sell in Africa and Middle East, the position is more or less the same. A flat year.
Meanwhile, a premium global OEM, focusing on diesel generator sets for applications between 1,500 and 4,000 kVA will probably experience market growth of 32% in 2024. Some regions will be much higher.
One of the benefits of maintaining an industry database over a long period of time is seeing trends and being able to put numbers to them, often at a very detailed level. In this article, we're sharing some of these at a global level. Â
How growth is split among OEM types.
How growth is split in terms of usage of diesel generator sets.
How growth is split across power bands.
2024 will be another boom year for premium OEMs focused on critical power applications.
1. How growth is split among OEM types
Across the industry for diesel generator sets, there is a multitude of players of all types. Â
For this analysis we've grouped them together in three groups: premium, midmarket and low cost. Â
Premium vertically integrated OEMs
Engines and other core components usually carry the company brand. These are major global players and most are based in the US. Â
Independent packagers
Buying in engines and most major components from other OEMs.
Low cost country OEMs and packagers
Using their own low-cost engines or buying in local low cost engines and components.
OEM Types:Â All Power Bands
Since 2018, premium OEMs have accounted for an increasing share of the global industry opportunity, rising from around 40% to more than 50% in 2024. Â
Comparing 2024 with 2018, premium OEMs have accounted for almost 70% of overall market growth, with a CAGR of 13%.
The industry opportunity for Independent Packagers has had a CAGR of 4% since 2018, and low cost country OEMs / packagers a CAGR of 6%.

OEM Types: 7.5 - 1500 kVA
Between 7.5 and 1500 kVA, the market is very competitive with a multitude of industry players. Global industry growth since 2018 has been shared quite evenly among the OEM types, with each accounting for almost a third of growth. Â
Growth CAGRs across the OEM types range from 4 - 6%. Â

OEM Types: > 1500 kVA
Above 1500 kVA, the market is dominated by Premium global OEMs. Â
In 2024 above 1500 kVA, these account for three quarters of the industry opportunity and for 90% of industry growth compared with 2018. Â
Driven by increasing demand for generator sets for critical power applications, above 1500 kVA, the industry has grown rapidly. In 2024, our forecast is 30% growth and the CAGR since 2018 has been 14%.
At these ratings, the industry opportunity for Premium OEMs has had a growth CAGR of 19% since 2018, far ahead of Independent Packagers at 4%. Â

2. How growth is split in terms of usage of diesel generator sets
Over the last 5 - 6 years, globally growth in diesel generator sets has been strongest and most consistent in regions where the utility electricity supply is relatively stable and reliable. Â
Today there are more customers with higher sensitivity to power loss and the data highlights more diesel generator sets being purchased to offset risk of outages, no matter how small, in more critical applications. Â
Usage: All Power Bands > 7.5 kVA
Globally around half of all diesel generator sets sold in 2024 operate for less than 150 hours a year. Most of these units barely operate at all and when they do, it's for testing every few months.
These barely-used diesel generator sets account for the majority of market growth. Â
Compared with 2018, in 2024, units operating for less than 150 hours a year accounted for two thirds of all growth, almost $4.5 billion with a CAGR of 12%.

Usage: Power Bands from 7.5 - 1500 kVA
From 7.5 - 1,500 kVA, while the overall global industry has grown since 2018, with a 5% CAGR, proportionally, usage has remained fairly constant. Â
Over the last 5 - 6 years, the slight increase in the opportunity for units operating for less than 150 hours a year has come mostly from North America and, more recently, from Europe. Â

Usage: Power Bands > 1500 kVA
The picture is very different above 1,500 kVA. Â
In 2024, around three quarters of the market opportunity is accounted for by units operating for less than 150 hours a year. Usually based in countries where the grid supply is reliable, this group of customers are the fastest growing across the entire industry with a CAGR of 17% since 2018 and accounting for more than 80% of industry growth at power ratings above 1,500 kVA. Â
These are most often customers buying diesel generator sets for critical power applications, predominantly data centers. Â
Critical power segments, especially data centers, are major growth drivers for generator sets above 2,000 kVA

3. How growth is split across power bands
Looking at power bands, there is really only one standout.
From 2018 - 2024, the opportunity from 2001 - 4000 kVA has experienced a CAGR of around 20% and accounts for almost 60% of industry growth when 2024 is compared with 2018. Â
At these higher ratings, much of the industry (around 80%) is concentrated on a few premium global OEMs, and focused on premium, critical power sectors. Â
Meanwhile, other power bands have experienced a 2018 - 24 CAGR of around 5%.

Summary
In a typical year, around the world there are usually several regional events, created by natural forces and by human activity, which drive demand for generator sets. But by far the strongest and most consistent driver of growth has been increasing electrification and digitalization. Â
The story told by these numbers is one of growth where the value proposition of diesel generator sets is strong.
Diesel generator sets are less than ideal where they need to operate almost continuously over a sustained period of time.
But they are without equal when immediate power is needed for a short time. Â
They start immediately and accept load quickly. And this makes them ideal for emergency situations or critical standby power applications like data centers, healthcare or critical manufacturing processes. And many of these happen to be the fastest growing industry sectors. Â
And today that means that the market for diesel generator sets is growing most quickly where:
The utility grid is relatively reliable.
Usage of the generator set is very low but it's considered essential to offset even a very small risk of power outages.
The application is critical.
Diesel generator sets accept load quickly and are ideal for short-term use for critical power applications such as data centers.Â
